Diploma In Cold Chain Technology (DCCT)

The Diploma in Cold Chain (DCC) offered at ECUREI, is intended to prepare trainees for future employment in the field of installation, maintenance, service, and repair of Cold Chain storage and Instrumentation used in the health care system. 

The course is designed to equip trainees with the knowledge and skills to enable them work safely, accurately, effectively and efficiently in most of the cold chain instrumentation. The course is also intended to impart general knowledge so as to positively change the trainees’ attitude to global health challenges thus enabling them to contribute positively to the society.

The Diploma in Cold Chain Storage and Instrumentation (DCC) lasts a minimum of 3 years. Each year consists of 2 semesters. A semester is 17 weeks, 15 weeks for teaching and 2 weeks for examinations.

OBJECTIVES

The curriculum is aiming at producing Cold Chain Technicians with the following specific abilities:

(a) Knowledge 

  1. Understand the principle of operation and use of common healthcare equipment and systems that are expected to be found in Healthcare centers in the country.
  2. Use acquired knowledge to provide guidance and advice in the Cold Chain storage and Instrumentation acquisition and maintenance cycle.
  3. Demonstrate a high degree of ability to solve problems related to the Cold Chain storage and Instrumentation work environment
  4. Discuss the basic components of Cold Chain storage and Instrumentation or Equipment.
  5. Discuss the different types of Refrigeration And Air Conditioning / Cold Chain storage and Instrumentation or Equipment according to specific need

 (b) Skills

  1. Assemble pre-designed electronic, electro-biomedical or electro-mechanical prototypes, plan and prepare for equipment acquisition, installation, servicing, repair / maintenance and disposal in respect to the instructions of the resident Engineer or Manufacturer.
  2. Troubleshooting faults in a confident and competent manner. 
  3. Design / interpret custom schematic diagrams for electrical and electronic wiring, and be able to evaluate these against the physical systems they will represent.
  1. Offer professional advice in the process of acquisition, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal of Cold Chain storage and Instrumentation or Equipment.
  2. Manage the Cold Chain storage and Instrumentation maintenance program including among others, inventory management.
  3. Organise / plan for professional user training in the efficient use and care for Cold Chain storage and Instrumentation.

(c) Attitude 

  1. Cultivate an innovative attitude.
  2. Develop a sense of professionalism.
  3. Appreciate the roles of Healthcare Technology Management (HTM).

Entry Requirements

Direct Entry

Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or its equivalent.  Entrants, must have at least one (1) principal pass, and 2 subsidiaries at the same sitting in any of the following subjects; physics, mathematics, chemistry and biology but with mathematics, biology and physics as essential subjects. He / she should also have at least 5 Passes at Ordinary Level at the same sitting.

Mature Entry

  1. Diploma in a relevant medical technology. (Radiography, Medical Laboratory Technology, Orthopedic Technology, ENT clinical or the equivalent)
  2. Diploma in electrical or electronic or mechanical engineering from an institution recognized by the National Council for Higher Education.
  • National Certificate in electrical or electronic or mechanical engineering from an institution recognized by the National Council for Higher Education.

The graduate, who is called a Cold Chain Storage and Instrumentation Technician, may be employed in a private or public hospital.  They may manage the biomedical department and may be employed in a biomedical manufacturing industry as technical advisors or work as sales agents. The graduate may advance later to obtain a bachelors, a masters and PhD in related field
